Emerald

Emerald, a gemstone variety of the mineral beryl (Be3Al2(SiO3)6), gains its green color from trace amounts of chromium or sometimes vanadium. With a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, emerald is a cyclosilicate. The word "emerald" comes from the Greek "σμάραγδος" (smáragdos; "green gemstone").

Emeralds are mined in various geological environments and can exhibit shades of green, sometimes with a bluish or yellowish tint. Colombia, the largest producer of emeralds globally, is known for the finest quality stones. The mining locations include the Boyacá and Cundinamarca departments in the eastern ranges of the Andes.

Colombian emeralds are primarily found in sedimentary Cretaceous shales. Fluids from orogenesis reacted with organic material in the shales, precipitating minerals such as calcite, dolomite, muscovite, pyrite, quartz, albite, and beryl.

Colombian emeralds are prized for their exceptional quality and color. The value of the gemstone depends on its size, clarity, color, and luster. Each emerald is unique, with deep green being considered the most beautiful and rarest.
